Spansolina FC 4 - 3 Team FATA

Siong
Galvin X 2

We had a turnout of 14 people excluding 3 people who pulled by the day before.

In what it seems to be a good day for some ball kicking after months, we lost a game not to our opponent but to ourselves. We have no one to blame, weather was good, ref was good, opponent wasn't the strongest of all, but we were worse. Sign of rustiness were seen in every department, defense weren’t alert, midfield not controlling enough, attackers not sharp. And I blame no one but myself for missing in action for the longest time.

First Half (4-5-1)
Cambiasso
Munzir Siong Lionel Jack Marcus
Sean WeeHian Collin KianHock
William

Trailing 1-3 going into half time.

Second Half (4-5-1)
Siong
Galvin Cambiasso Eugene Marcus Munzir
Simon Jack Sean KianHock
William

We managed to come back to 3-3 before conceding the vital goal.

The bad
- Everything except below

The good
- Newcomer Eugene was everywhere in the middle of the pitch, he is staking his claim for the DM position!
- Galvin was at his best terrifying defence with his dribbling and scored 2 goals
- Marcus with his 2 great assist from the central midfield

After a convincing 8-2 win in the previous match, our spirits and self-beliefs were high only to be dampened by yet another poor turnout. We needed 3 outside players to make up a competitive team! Yes, we have no sub for the match but luckily it was truly a friendly match as high professionalism were displayed by both teams and we were blessed by the cool weather.

We were conned by Wee Hian who told us that it was a Uncles' team. Upon arriving at the field, we notice few Uncles out of the whole 20 people wearing man utd jersey; have to give credits to the opposite Captain for his mind game because it works, unfortunately.

First Half
(4-5-1)
Matthew
Collin
Amos Siong Wei Lionel Irving
Jin Hao Wee Hian Yuxian Kian Hock
GG

We started well for the first 5 to 10min despite knowing that we might get thrashed. Our keeper; GG managed to save a few shots before letting in their crucial first goal which sort of boosted their morale. Soon after, we were seen chasing wind and seen little of the ball. This was not helped by GG's poor goalkeeping instincts and Yu Xian's poor performance as a centre back. The centre mids, as usual, failed to perform up to expectation. Our flanks were not working as we have difficulty holding the ball in all areas.

In one of our rare attacks, Matthew managed to break free before squaring onto the on-rushing Collin. His first time effort was saved by the keeper. This only clear cut chance sums up our performance for the first half.

Second Half (4-5-1)
Matthew
Amos
Yuxian Siong Wei Lionel Irving
Jin Hao Collin GG Kian Hock
Wee Hian

With no sub to play with, there is little room to play with. In their attempt to save the team from humiliation, Wee Hian decided to put on the glove while Collin partner up with GG in central defense. With seemingly little match experience shown by the 3 outside players, the rest of us managed to step up a gear despite the opposition fielding almost a whole new team (with fresh legs of course and eager to put in a performance after watching us for the first half).

In a promising free kick position to whip in a good cross, Lionel managed to find Siong Wei who seems to have the slightest contact (as claimed by him) to flick it to Yuxian who volleyed it into the net. Few minutes later, Matthew managed to got hold of the ball. He dribble towards the centre before releasing a powerful shot outside the penalty box. Their keeper parries the high ball only to let our right-back Kian Hock finish it.

The second half defense was much more compact and we hold out their attack pretty well. Our beliefs were growing that our third goal was coming. Unfortunately, Wee Hian let slip a high ball only to let their striker tap it from close range. But no fault was pointed as he has little experience playing as a keeper and it was raining at that time.

Our ever dangerous Matthew managed to get the ball at the half way line and did a sensational lob over their keeper at the half way point (just to clarify, the field was a small one :)). However, they managed to put in another goal just before the full time to make it a 3-5 loss for us.

Overall despite the loss, it was still a decent result by us with the line up we have.

The bad
- Poor turnout
- Overwhelmed by their midfielders
- Late comers in Jin Hao and his friend (luckily the ref was late too)
- Individual players lost ball easily when pressured
- Not much movement off the ball
- Our mistakes which led to 2 goals that should not have happened

The good
- Reasonable second half performance with the lineup we have
- Credits to Wee Hian for his bravery to wear the gloves and made a crucial world-class save in the second half

After another long layoff of 3 months (I seriously think we do meet up quarterly), with most of the members busy with schools and exams, we head back to the place where we had our very 1st match, Yishun Ring Road. The condition of the field is much better as compared to the last few times we played. Weather is good, our opponents aren’t intimidating, and we were all raring to go.

From the moment the whistle signals the start of the match, we dominated the game. Its amazing to see the Fatarians putting in one of the best first half performance. In the 10th minute, after much confidence play, Sean sends a high through ball and Siong Wei breaks the offside trap to send the Fatarians 1 up. Awhile later, Galv’s freekick from the right was nodded on by Lionel to CJ, who makes no mistake from 5 yards. While our opponents are still sorting out their defence, we hit them with the 3rd goal. Zheng Hui and Munzir combine down the left to release Matt, who coolly rounded the keeper. Then it was Matt who return the favor when he sends Zheng Hui free after his off the ball run into the penalty box. After some tinkering, we took shifted down a gear and let them come back with 2 goals. William keep us in the game with a number of saves in 1 on 1 situations. We still managed to get one more goal when Matt plays a neat one two with Qing Feng and side-footed the ball to the left corner.

Second Half (4-4-2)
Matthew
Cambiasso
Galvin Cong Jin Marcus Lionel
Zhen Hui Wee Hian Sean Augustus
Munzir

2nd Half we proceed with 4-5-1 as the key to winning is shutting down their 2 center midfielders. With Marcus and CJ dropping abit deeper, Cambiasso was allowed to roam forward freely which he enjoys doing. The plan works with much effect as the goals began to flow again. After soaking up one of their attack, we hit them on the break from the right. Cambiasso played a perfect through pass and Galv finished with a grounder. 6-2 is the score if you’ve lost me already. We began to come back into the game. Cambiasso, Galv and Matt are terrorizing their defence at will. Cambiasso and Galv had some good exchanges before Galv sends a deep cross for Matt to volley in the 7th. While our opponents are searching for their 3rd consolation, we wrapped it up when Jinhao brings the ball to the byline and pull it back for Galv to slots home the final goal. Final whistle blows and the score is 8-2.

With a few new players in our team today, it was good timing that our opponents weren’t insanely strong (remember the construction workers). After a superb start in the 1st 30minutes, we switched off for awhile. There was no communication in defence when Cambiasso was brought back to defence with Wee Hian going off. The midfield also didn’t fall back fast enough to protect the back four in a lot of occasions. On the good side, almost all of our members found their best playing position. There is bound to be more exciting football coming from the new recruitments. Man of the match goes to Matt again for his contributions to the team. Joke of the day, William missed the ball from a corner and shouted ‘Shit!’

Team FATA Chalet Photos

Long overdue photos from our inaugural team chalet. In spite of the poor attendance (less than half of the team players), we still have lotsa fun thanks to a wonderfully created beverage called alcohol.

Unfortunately we did not take enough shots of the food, only managed to find these 2

First Half (4-4-2)

The winter break finally comes to an end with our first match after the holiday season. An interesting comparison was made with the quarterly technology event in Singapore, the PC show, IT show, Sitex and Comex, as the last time we met was in Dec (I have to clarify that this was written by Jin Hao and I have no idea what it means lol).

Everybody was itching to play but the final number of turn-outs was down to 14 from 17 due to illness and injuries to some of our players. Matthew, who ultimately made the difference, still came down despite being ill. Amos dropped by after church as our venue this time was nearby. Siong Wei and Kian Hock were late and thus were punished by Collin by not starting the match.

Game on, our first half was being pinned back by the opponents, mostly due to the fact that we have not been playing regularly and the drop in fitness level. The first goal eventually came as the opponent beats our offside trap and scores. Although Jack got a hand onto the first attempt, the second brushed against his head and into the roof of the net. Our center pitch was being dominated as both Cong Jin and Zhen Hui could not strike a partnership in an impromptu arrangement. Cedric was too quiet throughout the match and his inexperience was exposed easily by the opponent. He was subbed out eventually by Siong Wei. The half ended with most of our players frustrated with little or no penetration to our opponent.

Second Half (4-4-2)
Matthew Amos
Jin Hao Collin Siong Wei Galvin
Simon Wee Hian Sean Kian Hock
Jack

The sky darkens and rain falls. Match was almost cancelled but the rain subsided about an hour later. Credits to Maestro FC for finding a replacement referee in double quick time. With some tactical changes of employing Collin and Siong in the centre midfield, where they had a considerable amount of years playing together, it bolstered our midfield significantly. With our major attacking threat of Joel, Collin and CJ off form, we needed other players to step up a gear. With Matthew and Amos moving upfront, Collin and SW bolster the midfield, Galvin and Jin Hao on the flanks, effects were positive as we got into the game.

In one of our counterattacks, Matt got the ball with 2 defenders closing down on him. Jh managed to drag one away to allow space for him to curl the ball into the bottom right corner for the equalizer. Galv’s tactic of switching flanks with Jh is beginning to work. Jh’s quick long throw caught the opponents’ defense off guard when one of them miss the ball and hit his arm. Penalty appeals were turn down but the loose ball goes to Galv who coolly treads it to Amos for the 2nd goal. It was then he created the 1st of Team FATA’s celebration – The Champions League Final Celebration! (Of course invented by SW). Wee Hian ran all the way to hug the goal scorer much to everyone’s amaze (and to some of us, an embarrassment lol).

Then a goal was gifted to Matt as their GK scuff a clearance, with the goal at his mercy he lobbed the ball into the net to make it 3-1. A penalty conceded late in the game gives them a glimmer of hope but the match soon ends with the final score at 3-2.

The bad
- Centre Midfield was empty on few occasions in the first half. (This was actually copied and pasted from previous match review.) As you all can see, we still failed to address this major issue thus far.
- Cedric needs to be more confidence and get the ball more often because his crossing ability is sorely missed by the forwards.
- 1st half was one of the worse performance with virtually no talking, no movements and no passing.

The good
- Reasonably good 2nd half performance to compensate the 1st half.
- Thumbs up to all those who played in defence, particularly Kian Hock and Simon who are still relatively new to the team in terms of games played.
- The ever reliable Matthew for constant threat up front, notwithstanding he carried a slight fever.

Man of the Match – Matt, for putting in another good performance by being a constant thorn in the opponents defence in the 2nd half and scoring a brace.
